Sedums are succulents, having the ability to store water in their tissues and use it efficiently. These mat-forming or upright plants occupy habitats from arid deserts and grasslands to mountain cliffs. Succulence and other adaptations (waxy coatings, purple or blue\/silver leaf coloration) allow Sedums to thrive in harsh conditions—cold, heat, wind, blazing sun, dry shallow soils. These tough, low-maintenance plants prefer average-to-poor soil and require excellent drainage. Also known as Stonecrops, they present a kaleidoscope of substantial, colorful foliage over a long season, topped by star-shaped, nectar-rich flowers for pollinators.
