The trowel we reach for time and again (because it does almost everything) is the Spear & Jackson Multi-Purpose Serrated Trowel. The nearly 5" stainless steel blade has a pointed end that’s helpful for breaking through hard or compacted soil. It is engraved with measurements up to 4" to assist in determining planting depths (without running indoors for the yardstick). One side of the blade is partially serrated to eliminate weeds or small roots and to open plastic bags full of mulch or compost. The contoured, branded, hardwood handle is sculpted to invite a comfortable and steady grip and it’s finished with a leather loop for hanging plus a steel cap that is just right for tamping in small garden stakes, plant markers, and staples. We can’t do without it.
